James Baldwin

Theatre maker and scriptwriter

James is a professional writer, director & creative facilitator and dramaturge. James is the former literary associate at The Marlowe and has worked with the National Theatre, the National Theatre of Scotland, the Old Vic, in the West End, and regionally. James is the recipient of the Lilian Baylis Award for Theatrical Excellence, the Ideastap Innovator's Award, and the Walter Tull Playwriting Prize. He is the recipient of Peggy Ramsay, ACE and Leverhulme funding. James is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and he is an alumnus of the Royal Court Young Writers' Programme. James trained in continuing drama through the BBC Writers Room Shadow Scheme, following which he joined the pool of writers on BBC flagship daytime drama, 'Doctors'. James is published by Methuen Drama/Bloomsbury. James is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and is an Associate Artist at the egg, Theatre Royal Bath.

James is passionate about accessibility and inclusivity. His community projects have won multiple Koestler Awards and contributed to two Young People Now Awards. His prison radio plays made with young offenders have been heard over 750k times. James is Artistic Director of Toucan Theatre Limited where he co-creates multisensory experiences that tour to theatre spaces and disability settings.

NEWS: Summer 2025 saw the completion of James’ facilitation and direction of ‘Deeper You Swim’ a radio drama collaboration with the Sheppey Cluster Prisons, Dante or Die and National Prison Radio.

The Naughty Fox and The Noisy Dinosaur have completed a 12 week national tour, Spring 2025.

‘Kiss, Marry, Kill’ toured with Dante or Die in Spring/Summer 2024 and is published by Metheun Drama.

The egg, Theatre Royal Bath, presented ‘WENDY: a Peter Pan story’ across 50 SOLD OUT performances, Winter 23/24.
